A few evenings later, Cam took his phone to the balcony to review messages/email. He smiled when he saw Amelie’s latest text.

U sure Kayleigh’s not UR daughter?

He looked at the attached photo.

Where did you get this?

He waited for the dots to indicate a reply while he looked closer at the picture. A smile spread across his face as he noticed the spark in Kayleigh’s eyes. Heartbreaker.

Amelie’s text appeared a few minutes later.

Mom. That’s me when I was three or four.

Instead of replying, Cam pressed the call button. “You’re screwing with me, right?”

He heard her delighted laugh. “Not a chance, big brother. Mom finally sent me more baby pictures. This looks the most like Kayleigh. You sure there’s not something you haven’t told me?”

“Hardly. Though, I did think you’d sent a photo of Kayleigh. The resemblance is…kinda…eerie.”

“I think it’s more than just eerie, Cam. I didn’t share any photos with Mom. You know she’d be all over you for hiding her grandchild.”

Cam released a sigh. “Right. Please don’t share this. It’s just a bizarre coincidence.”

“Cliff, you know I don’t believe in coincidences.”

“What are you saying, Amie?”

“Somewhere about five years ago you hooked up with Shannon. It’s the only explanation that makes sense. Think about it, Cam—how many girls did you sleep with while you were in Atlanta, Tampa, then Atlanta again?”

“I would remember, Shannon.”

“After a few drinks? C’mon, Cliff, you can’t remember any of them, I bet.” Amelie paused. “Did you ever exchange names?”

“Not for one-night hook-ups.”

“But they all knew who you were.”

“Shannon’s not a puck bunny,” Cam scoffed. “You don’t think I’d remember her? Or that she’d forget me?”

“That was five years ago—both of you could have thrown back a few too many shots. You told me she lived not far from the arena. Time for a heart-to-heart?”

“Amelie, drop it, please. If by some random act in the universe Shannon and I had hooked up, she’d have told me. She’d know I was the father. Just don’t spread your wild theories.”

“You just think you’re that memorable. If she’d partied a little too much, she may not remember you—as hard as that seems. Just looking out for my brother—and his baby mama.” As usual, Amelie got in the last word before she disconnected the call.

Cam tossed the phone onto the nearby chaise and closed his eyes. Could he be Kayleigh’s father? Six months ago, that thought would have provoked hives, now…maybe not so much. Nothing casual about my feelings for Shannon. Does she reciprocate? Hard to tell. I know I come in somewhere below Kayleigh and Nanna G on her favorite persons list—but she still holds me at arm’s length most of the time. Thank God, she trusts me enough to interact with Kayleigh. The idea that they could be a family did not ignite the panic he’d expect. Is that even a possibility? What if Amelie’s correct? He quickly dismissed the thought. Shannon would tell him if he were Kayleigh’s father…wouldn’t she?

Cam had never stayed in a relationship this long—sometimes he wished he had a roadmap.
